Lionel Messi’s £492m Barcelona contract was recently leaked by a Spanish newspaper, El Mundo. Barcelona denied “any obligation regarding the distribution of this document”. As per El Mundo, Messi’s four-year contract merited a potential 555,237,619 euros until 30 June 2021, when his contract officially ends with Barca.
It implies the 33-year-old would get up to £123m a season. Barcelona said in a statement that they “regret” the leaked news, adding: “FC Barcelona completely rejects any obligation for the publication of this report, and will make a suitable legitimate move against the paper El Mundo, for any harm that might be caused because of this leaked news.
“FC Barcelona express their sadness regarding the leaked contract and shows their absolute help for Lionel Messi, particularly notwithstanding any endeavor to dishonor his image, and to harm his relationship with the entity where he has worked to become the best of the best on the planet and in football history.”
Messi is Barcelona’s record goal scorer and has won 10 La Liga titles, the Champions League multiple times and the Ballon d’Or – granted to the world’s best player – multiple times.
