“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor Frankl
When we are criticized about the things we value or respect our usual reaction is to argue, be defensive or shout with anger. On the other hand when same situation is encountered by next person they stand for themselves in a calm manner. Both person were in similar situation however they acted very differently. What is that makes one group of people to react in an aggressive and constraint manner while other in calm and open manner?
It’s the space between stimulus and response. First group of people responded automatically and unconsciously, a certain stimulus means fixed response; they were unknown about the various other possible way to respond to the given situation. They looked it from one perspective and immediately acted and couldn’t sense the space of freedom where many other possibilities were available. While second group recognized that being defensive was not only the option. Eventually, they choose best for the given situation. They were able stepped out of the ongoing pattern which created a new and beneficial pattern for them.
There are numerous examples of people who were brought up in an unfavorable circumstances have uplifted themselves in most extraordinary ways. They have mastered their response towards their vision was so profound that stimulus didn’t mattered at all. Normally, people with bad conditions (stimulus) deals with it in a bad way (response) which results in bad condition and this pattern is in constant loop. So, to break this cycle we must harness the space of freedom and change our response which is based on best version of ourselves regardless the circumstances around us. So, let’s explore that space of freedom and create a life we truly want.
