Indian Premier League 2021, the most famous cricket franchise league, that had been postponed due to the looming threat of COVID-19, has now been shifted to the United Arab Emirates. The matches are expected to return on the third week of September with the final being played on the second week of October. The schedule for the individual matches has not yet been decided.
Earlier, BCCI had postponed this cricketing carnival after several cases of COVID-19 came into light despite the tournament being played in a bubble. The league had been under scrutiny for continuing the games ignoring the severe reality of the outside world. India has been struggling with the pandemic quite severely and many believed IPL simply ignored this grim reality.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL Governing council finally decided on May 4 to bring the matches to halt to ensure safety of the players and staffs involved. Last year, IPL 2020 was also shifted to UAE under similar circumstances within India. Mumbai Indians was successful in retaining their trophy in that tournament.
