Nadal who is a record breaking 13th time championship holder at the french open and record breaking 21st Grand slam title with a straight victory over Popyrin with 6-3, 6-2, (7-6)(3). It is really tough to win a match against Nadal at the french Open and probably more impossible too. He has a career record of 100-2 at french open.
Alexei Popyrin came close twice to take a set from Nadal but it all seemed too much with the king of clay. This win increased his run to 26 consecutive sets in paris. Nadal trailed 5-2 and Popyrin was a point from ending the set streak while serving at 5-3, 40-30 but he couldn’t pull it off by double faulting to deuce. Then there was another set point but he shanked a leaping overhead nearly hitting Nadal with the ball with two more wild forehand misses the game was already placed in Nadal’s hand. Popyrin hung in pretty well. He took control of a good number of points too but his passes were just too easy for Nadal.
Nadal is as nailed on for french Open as he has ever been, it would seem injury and external factors aside, who can realistically get close to him? His forehand is just unstoppable when he takes a stepback and unleashes it is formidable. He already looks favourite to win again as he is still the king of clay. The funny thing is he doesn’t even look like 35 years old. He looked even stronger than he did in last year’s french Open. he is still teaching tennis lessons to those who think he has passed his prime. Dude is a machine. Nadal is a king here and we all know it, down 2-5 to 7-6.
