The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has informed that the water from Melamchi will be unavailable from Asar 1st to Bhadra due to maintenance work of the tunnel. The government officials are planning for alternatives for getting the water supply in that time period.
The officials have planned to supply the water by filtering the water from the Bagmati river as they have done in the past. The Melamchi Water Supply Development Board and Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) are already directed to manage the water supply. The officials told that since last year, the filtered water from the Bagmati river is being supplied in the 3 months in the rainy season.
Ram Kumar Shrestha, who heads the Melamchi Water Supply Boards said that maintenance is required as the tunnel is newly built. He says there are no problems and it is only periodic maintenance. He assured that the board will make sure the water supply will not be reduced due to this maintenance activity.
The Managing Director of KUKL Milan Shakya said that 1051 customers are getting the water supply currently. He says the alternative arrangements will supply the water during the maintenance activity of the Melamchi tunnel.
