The world health organization (WHO) has granted permission for emergency use of CoronaVac, a corona vaccine produced by the Synovac company. The vaccine will now be used in WHO’s Worldwide vaccine-sharing program known as “Covax”.
CoronaVac is the second chinese produced vaccination for corona to be approved by the WHO. Earlier, in May, WHO gave emergency permit use to Sinopharm produced Vaccine. During a press briefing held in Geneva on Tuesday, WHO director General, Dr. Tedros Adhamon vouched for the effectiveness and safety of the CoronaVac vaccine.

The WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of experts on immunization (SEZ) also studied the Sinovac vaccine. Based on their evidence, WHO has recommended that the vaccine be given to people 18 years of age and older.
Two doses of the vaccine should be registered in a period of a month. 51% of those vaccinated with Coronavac were immune to the virus whereas 100% of the vaccinated were prevented from being hospitalized.
The WHO had earlier authorized emergency use of Pfizer-Biontech, Astrazeneca, Jhonson (Jhonson and Jhonson) and Serum institute’s Covershield.
