Serena Williams was in full control of her French Open match to get back to the third round by pulling away to beat Mihaela 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. She was at her best with unreturnable serve but was still pushed to a third set by her opponent offering all sorts of spins, with speed and angles. She has 3 of her 23 grand slams singles at French Open. Her serving was the difference maker for the outset.
By the end of the first set, Williams had won 20 of 23 points she had served. But things changed dramatically in the second set. Mihaela measured all of those powerful offerings and managed herself right back in the thick of things by breaking twice in a row. But Serena took full control of the third set. Her movement was way better. She kept putting so much power in the ball that her opponent was almost on constant defense. Her inside out backhands were absolutely incredible and was looking more explosive throughout the game.
Mihaela did have the momentum in the 2nd set. Her angles shots were just amazing. Her defense was incredible in the match. She did won amazing defensive point at the end of the 3rd set by it wasn’t enough to save her the game. Her amazing magnificent drop shot for a thrilling rally was the highlight to watch. She did come prepared but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to beat Serena.
Serena Williams is a legend and it’s wonderful to see her battle at the age of 40. The fact she can still compete and win against 20 years old junior is testament to her greatness. Hope she stays relaxed, focused and keeps her energy levels high moving forward in the tournament.
