According to Australia’s Victoria state authorities, delta covid-19 virus variant, considered highly infectious and contagious, has been detected for the first time in the recent outbreak in Melbourne.
Delta variant falls under the four highly concerning covid-19 variants classified by the World Health organization (WHO). It is considered as the likely cause of the latest outbreak in India.
Brett Sutton, the chief health officer of Victoria state spoke to the reporters in Melbourne on Friday, showing his concern on the issue. He said that the authorities are looking to find out potential places and personnel that might lead to the point of acquisition of the delta variant.it was detected in two members of a family who had visited the neighboring state of New South Wales a couple of weeks ago and also visited popular tourist areas while likely carrying the virus. However, there have been no reports of any locally acquired cases in New South Wales in a month.
The second most populous Australian state, Victoria, on the other hand is battling to suppress the latest outbreak as the hard lockdown going on from two weeks in Melbourne has been further extended until June 10, in light of the success of restrictions in the past. strict lockdowns and regional border restrictions have significantly helped authorities in the past to control such outbreaks and restrict the number of cases and casualties.
