The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it will increase the number of teams participating in the ODI and T20 World Cups.
The ICC Board decided on Tuesday to increase the number of participating teams by fixing the schedule for the various competitions from 2024 to 2031. The men’s trophy will also be resumed, said by the ICC.
14 teams will participate in the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027 and 2031. A total of 54 matches will be played in the tournament. The ICC has stated that 20 teams will participate in the T20 World Cup to be held in 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030 and 55 matches will be played. Similarly, 8 teams will participate in the Champions Trophy in 2025 and 2029. The final of the ICC World Test Championship will be held in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031.
According to the ICC, there will be two groups of 7-7 teams in the ODI World Cup. The top three performing teams in the group stage will reach the Super Six stage. According to the ICC, this is the format of the 2003 ODI World Cup.
Similarly, there will be 4 groups of 5 teams in the T20 World Cup. The top two teams from each group will reach the next stage, which is Super 8.
Earlier, 16 teams participated in the 2016 T20 World Cup and 10 teams in the 2019 ODI World Cup.
