Considered as one of the best hiking destinations around the Kathmandu Valley, Chitlang Indrasarovar Lake Hike takes you on an adventurous journey to the paradise called Chitlang and the biggest manmade lake in Nepal. Chitlang village lies in Makwanpur district and is nestled between two hills on the north and south, along with an artificial lake along the east. Surrounded by lush green wilderness that boasts of more than one hundred and sixty-six species of birds and rich wildlife, this hike is gaining immense popularity among local tourists for both its natural and artificial beauty.
About the Hike
The hike begins from Thankot, which is easily accessible from Kathmandu. You can take a public transport from Ratnapark to Thankot which takes around 30-40 minutes. Upon arrival, you will head towards Godam from where you will follow the well-constructed road to Chitlang. Moving past Godam, the trail takes you to the dense forest surrounding Chandragiri. You will be pleased with breathtaking views of the Chandragiri temple at one side along with the entire Kathmandu Valley below. After hiking for about 5 hours, you will reach Chitlang. Rest of the day you can explore the beautiful village with great set up of houses and lush hills surrounding the village from all sides. You will stay overnight at Chitlang and head for Indrasarovar the next day.
Moving past the quaint Chitlang village, the trail leads you to the Newari village Markhu, and then towards Indrasarovar, a small farm village. The journey from Chitlang to IndraSarovar is a short hike lasting around 2 hours. Along the route, you will be rewarded with the pleasant view of sheep farm perched on an evenly distributed grassland over the hills. You can also relish the spectacular views from the one tree hill there. Nestled between the gorge of Markhu and Kulekhani VDC, the Indrasarovar lake is not just the largest man-made lake in Nepal, but also the only reservoir-based hydropower in the country. The suspension bridge over the lake serves as a great vantage point of Indrasarovar. The most popular activities in the lake are boating, and fishing. You can drive back from Indrasarovar to Kathmandu via the Khulekhani dam.
