Federer beat Marin Cilic 6-2, 2-6,7-6(4), 6-2 for his ninth win in 10 meetings against the big serving Croat and fifth in majors. This was a huge win for Federer to gain his confidence. Roger remains “the brilliant magician” whose sense and execution of the game and strategy are bar none.
Federer had some verbal arguments during the game. He lost his cool for taking too long between points when warned by the umpires. But he gained his confidence back after losing the 2nd set and played superbly.
It seems obvious that Cilic has never been able to overcome internal psychological barriers when playing against Federer. Everytime that Cilic plays against Federer he seems very unsure of himself, helpless, hopeless and destined to lose Cilic self destructed on his own serve on multiple occasions. Fact is Cilic lost it more than being heat. The umpire argument was a good distraction tactic, affecting Cilic alot from there on. Cilic was really playing with purpose and hitting with great pace, Roger was struggling when he was pushed to move either side, especially the backhand side. Though Cilic’s game has deteriorated a lot over the years, he is still an US open champion and is always a threat. Federer is still a top player but Cilic is not so strong on clay. He made a lot of mistakes.
Roger Federer was just terrific in this game and sheer class in every play. He has rolled back the years in this tournament. His tennis is just insanely beautiful. His phenomenal movement and confident ball striking is just out of this world to witness. His backhand was great as usual. Any other player Federer’s age would have lost the game when the opponent was hitting the ball with great pace, he kind of struggled, framed and missed a lot of balls. But Roger is a genius, he still has enough left in his tank with enough tools and tricks in his artillery to still pull out the great W. most of the other players, timeless and ageless.
