Do you see a half glass of water half-empty or half-full? This age-old question about how we perceive things may reflect our outlook on life, our attitude towards ourselves, and whether we are optimistic or pessimistic, that can even affect our health. Either you are a glass-half-empty or half-full kind of individual, studies have shown that both can affect our psychological as well as physical wellbeing and that being optimistic is better out of both. There have been a few studies which recommended that traits, for example, optimism and pessimism can influence numerous areas of our wellbeing and prosperity. Being optimistic helps in developing positive thinking and attitude which are the key parts for effective stress management. And there have been many benefits associated with effective stress management. However, if we are more inclined towards the pessimistic side, we don’t have to worry.

Positive thinking is one of the life skills which can be cultivated at any stage of our life and like any skills, the more we practice the art of positive thinking, the better we get at it. If we have to define positive thinking, it is an emotional and mental attitude that focuses on the good and expects results that will benefit us. It’s about expecting happiness, health, and success which means training ourselves to adopt a prosperous mindset and cultivate gratitude for our own successes and those of others. However, positive thinking doesn’t mean that we ignore life’s less pleasant situations, keeping our heads in the sand. It isn’t also about burying every negative thought or emotion we have or avoiding difficult feelings, because being human beings means having emotions, both positive as well as negative, and avoiding negative emotions while forcing positivity can get toxic. Positive thinking simply implies that we approach unpleasant circumstances in a more gainful and positive manner with the outlook that the best will occur, not the worst.

The power of positive thinking is very important since it can make or break an individual. Our thoughts influence our activities and our activities control us into whether we succeed in our field, as well as impact the nature of our own connections. It develops a positive attitude that helps us to cope more easily with daily life affairs. When we adopt it as a lifestyle, it can bring transformation in our lives, and makes us more joyful, more brilliant, and more successful. We can achieve positive thinking through a couple of methods that have been proven effective, like positive self-talk and having positive imaginations. Along with these, focusing on good things, practicing gratitude, spending time with positive people, identifying our negative areas and opening yourself to humor also assist to enhance our positive thinking skill. The most extraordinary impact of thinking positive has to do with the law of attraction. This is the idea that what we focus on, we attract. When we focus on the negative, we will experience more negatives. But when we focus on the positive, the whole world opens up to us.
