Austria won their opening game of the campaign against North Macedonia at Puskas Arena in Bucharest, Romania on Sunday scoring 3 -1. The game had an early goal as Stefan Lainer scored past Stole Dimitrievski to give an early lead. But the game was soon level when 37 years old Goran Pandev equalized to give the visitors a fighting chance to win the match.
But Michael Gregoritsch restored the lead for Austria in the 78th minute from a beautiful ball floated by David Alaba. North Macedonia were knocking on the door to level the game but their quest was soon settled by substitute Marko Arnautovic to give them massive 3 points on the group.
After each of the goals, the players sent the “get well soon” message to Christian Eriksen, who collapsed on the ground during the opening match against Finland.
North Macedonia will face Ukraine at Bucharest, Romania and Austria will face Netherlands at Johan Cruyff Arena, on the same day, June 17.
